Ugadi is New Year according to Luni-Solar calendar. Luni-Solar calendars consider the position of the Moon and the position of the Sun to divide the year into months and days. The counter-part of Luni-Solar calendar is Solar calendar which considers only position of the Sun to divide the year into months and days. Because of that Hindu New Year is celebrated twice in the year with different names and at two different times of the year. The Hindu New Year based on Solar calendar is known as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Pana Sankranti in Orissa and Naba Barsha in West Bengal.

The day begins with ritual oil-bath followed by prayers. Oil bath and eating Neem leaves are must rituals suggested by scriptures. North Indians don’t celebrate Ugadi but start nine days Chaitra Navratri Puja on the same day and also eat Neem with Mishri on the very first day of Navratri.Ugadi celebrations includes cleaning the house, people wake up early on Ugadi day and make special dishes on the day. People also visit temples on the day.

Alibaba Eyes Indian e-commerce Market, Plans To Invest In Snapdeal

Influenced by India's growing online retail market, there are reports that Chinese e-retailer Alibaba may invest in local e-retailer Snapdeal in a bid to tap the e-commerce sectors.Snapdeal , Alibaba in talks for Rs 6,200 crore funding round sources.

I was a bit confused on my first reading of the headlines today, after seeing articles saying e-commerce leader Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) was in talks to invest in 2 companies whose “snappy” names sounded quite similar. But a closer reading made it clear that these were 2 very different deals, one involving the popular US social networking service (SNS) Snapchat, and the other involving a popular Indian e-commerce site called Snapdeal .

Alibaba is on the verge of making its first direct investment in India. The Chinese e-commerce giant is in talks to invest as much as $1 billion in online marketplace Snapdeal, Reuters reported on Wednesday(March 11).

Snapdeal is already backed by Japan’s SoftBank and a number of U.S. investors including BlackRock, eBay and Intel Capital. The company competes against larger rivals Flipkart and Amazon, and if Alibaba became a major shareholder it could set the stage for Alibaba to carve out a piece of the second-largest e-commerce market. Alibaba’s Ant Financial affiliate, which now controls Alipay, acquired 25 percent of Indian payment services provider Paytm in February. Reuters’ unnamed sources couldn’t confirm any details of the negotiations except that negotiations are “ongoing” and that Alibaba is “looking, but there’s still no deal.”  But the Times of India’s Economic Times reported onWednesday that Jasper Infotech, which controls Snapdeal, wants $1 billion from Alibaba, with a valuation of at least $5 billion. That would give Alibaba only a 20 percent stake in Snapdeal, and that’s the sticking point, sources said. After its last funding round, Snapdeal had a valuation of $1.8 billion.

“Snapdeal has a term sheet from Alibaba, but is not getting the valuation [it] wants,” one source told the Economic Times. Another source familiar with the talks said private equity firms are making better offers, so Snapdeal could get its $1 billion without Alibaba investing the entire amount. Alibaba has been talking with Snapdeal since last year, and in November Alibaba founder Jack Ma told the Economic Times that he was ready to invest in India. All three of the top Indian e-commerce players are burning through cash as they offer customers deep discounts — and all three are chasing investors for money to burn. Flipkart raised $1.9 billion in 2014 and plans to raise $1.7 billion this year, while Amazon has committed $2 billion to its Indian operations. But the potential payoff is huge: A report last month said e-commerce could overtakeconventional brick-and-mortar retail sales in India by 2019.
